Moral of the story: don’t rely on any GPS 100% or when riding on a bus, always recline your seat back as far as it will go. Open-mouthed

That brings up an old question yet agan: Will Microsoft Streets & Trips include in a future release the ability to do large-vehickle routing?

    Hi Marvin,

Thanks for your question.  Although, I *totally* understand the importance of large vehicle tracking and the special needs they have (weight restrictions, high restrictions, etc) the data implementation is something we’re still investigating.
Drivers do need to use common sense and not rely on software for everything.  Many similar stories like this have been published with navigation solutions that don’t provide height restrictions – it would be scary to think how many drivers would find themselves in a crunch if S&T provided this data.  We would obviously need to find a reliable source (one of the big hurdles) and we would have to trust the data’s accuracy without having the ability to test it.  What if we only had 50% coverage for height restrictions?  How would the driver know if the data is missing or if no height restriction is in the database for that route?  Good discussion questions.   Any truckers out there?  What do you currently use to learn of ht/wt restrictions?

I drive truck for a living. Right now there are VERY few choices for the professional driver. Right now, I use ALK’s CoPilot Truck, which is supposed to be truck specific. I couldn’t count the number of times it almost got me into trouble on the FIRST day I used it.We need more choices for professional truckers & RVers. Please, please add this ability.I wouldn’t have a problem paying extra for this, whether it’s an add-on to Streets & Trips or if it’s sold as a completely seperate program.

Make S&T like Garmin (except for their small screens and large prices), then I’ll be happy!  Specifically, add trip data like Garmin provides, i.e. DISTANCE (not time) to final destination (not just to the next waypoint); distance driven; elapsed time; average driving speed; peak speed; time to destination at my average speed.  Always give me DISTANCE instead of the current (and totally useless) time which is based on a slider bar with no speeds associated with it.

When I reach and pass a waypoint, recognize that I really don’t want to stop there.  I put it in the route so the route would take my desired roads vs some route I didn’t want to take.  I get sick of having to delete the way point so S&T won’t keep telling me to go back to the waypoint after I’ve passed it.

When I’m driving around and not on a planned route, it would be nice to have the next cross street displayed in a text block somewhere on the screen.  It is much easier to see it that way instead of having to look for the name of the street on the actual map.  Once again, this is one of the nice little things Garmin does.  Pioneer displays the road I’m driving on in a text block instead of the next cross street.  Garmin’s way is far superior.

Put a scale on each and every map view!  When I’m using the full-screen mode, I have no idea what the zoom level is without the scale you put on the planning screen.

Remember my "Arrange Map View" preferences so that I don’t have to change them everytime I use S&T for guidance.  And for that matter, why should I have to even click "Arrange Map View"?  The map arrangement should be a given when I select "Start GPS Guidance".

It would be really cool if S&T could be controlled by a remote control device like some audio visual software can be controlled.  I’m not looking for all the functionality to be remote controled, but it would be nice if Zoom-In Zoom-Out, Repeat last verbal direction, turn screen on/off for night driving, and re-route from current point could be operated from a small remote control vs having to search for the proper key on the keyboard.

Do not look to the Pioneer AVIC-Z1 for software improvement ideas!  You are already better than they are.  I have an AVIC-Z1 installed in my vehicle, but I still use S&T on my laptop for trip planning and enroute guidance.

I currently plug my laptop into an auxillary audio input on my car stereo so I can play the audio instructions from S&T through my car stereo.  This way, I can actually hear the directions.  It would be nice if S&T could temporarily mute other audio programs on my laptop while it gives me audio directions.  This way, I could be listening to my iTunes (sorry, I just like that software better than Windows Media Player) music and not have to worry about missing directions.  I think Pioneer does this on the AVIC-Z1.

I recommend the Truck Stops Plus 08 add on template for Microsoft Streets & Trips, which is available at http://www.truckstopsplus.com. It a wonderful product that contains more than 7250 trucking specific points of interests for truckers and RVers like truck stops, Wal-Mart Supercenters, rest areas, turnpike service plazas, picnic/parking areas, and weigh stations.

It also contains Restricted Route and Low Clearance webpages that you can access with or without Internet connectivity by clicking on hyperlinks. You simply hold down the control key and click the designated hyperlinks and the Restricted Routes and Low Clearance webpages appear directly on your laptop display screen.  Making it much faster, easier, and convenient than using a Motor Carrier Road Atlas to verify your routes are Restricted Route and Low Clearance free.

You can also use the Find Nearby Places feature to find every trucking specific point of interest located within a 50-mile radius of your current location or at a location you anticipate being. Hence, finding, locating, and routing to truck stops, Wal-Mart Supercenters, rest areas, turnpike service plazas, etc. is a snap, and if you want to route to any one of them, you simply right click it and click Add To Route from the quick menu, then right click it again and choose Get Directions and bam, you are ready to go. It’s that easy and fast!

The Truck Stops Plus 08 add on template for Microsoft Streets & Trips is truly a great product for truckers and RVers, and the points of interest like the truck stops and Wal-Mart Supercenters are cataloged so that you can easily check on specific location information, parking size, services, and amenities that are offered by the individual truck stops and in the case of the Wal-Mart Supercenters, the full store address and phone numbers are provided.

I am a full time RV’er. I have tried two different GPS models and none have a setting for either driving a large vehicle or height clearances. I need to be able to be routed around any bridge/overpass that is under 12′ 5". I don’t fully rely on a GPS as they are wrong at least 15% of the time, but I don’t want to have a situation like I had in NH where the GPS routed me on a back road, the overpass was only 10′ high and I had no place to turn around. Had to disconnect the car and hold up traffic using the small roadway to get turned around.

As a Truck driver I also agree that MS S&T should upgrade to a trucker friendly version. To include low clearances, truck specific routes, hazwopper avoidence, along with adding in fuel stops, weight stations, rest areas, inspection stops, etc.
